Trappist beers are brewed in Trappist monasteries. The beer can only qualify for a Trappist certification if the brewery is in a monastery where the monks play a role in the production of the beer. While the profits are used to support the monastery or social programs. 6 of the 11 monasteries that qualify are in Belgium.
